The updated Mac Pro still has no firm delivery date, and the Mac mini - which has been the server hardware of choice for many small businesses - has been ignored for years. Add to this the fact that Apple doesn’t really sell server-specific hardware anymore, and it’s rather obvious that they want out of the business. Keeping the app up-to-date and supported takes significant resources, and the number of actual users of macOS Server is probably quite small. One other reason could be the size of the market for macOS Server. As a result, many administrators would actually replace the old Apple versions with newer open source ones. It’s known that in many cases, the services used by Apple were “officially-supported” open source projects, and the versions found in macOS Server often lagged badly behind the open source versions. That’s a good question! Sadly, there’s no real answer available from the company. These services are the “meat” of macOS Server, and they’ll be gone in a future release: Looking at the services that are disappearing, it’s obvious that macOS Server will no longer provide the majority of services that most administrators use it for. However, it goes on to say that “ These deprecated services will be removed in a future release of macOS Server, so those depending on them should consider alternatives, including hosted services.” The document goes on to say that if you’ve already configured one of the services, you’ll still be able to use it after the spring 2018 macOS Server update. A number of services will be deprecated, and will be hidden on new installations of an update to macOS Server coming in spring 2018.” As a result, some changes are coming in how Server works. A recent support document from Apple notes that “macOS Server is changing to focus more on management of computers, devices, and storage on your network. Little did we know at the time that Apple was preparing to remove the majority of those services.

And somehow it influences other projects. While obsessing over the macOS look is one thing, it deserves some attention considering Apple does have a good sense of design. The one weird thing about Gmac Linux is that weird logo that’s a mix of the GNOME and Apple logos.

Plus you get to keep your Ubuntu distribution. It also means that you won’t have to do all the customization all by yourself to make Ubuntu look like MacOS. That means you get Ubuntu Linux with a heavily customized GNOME desktop environment that looks a lot like macOS. It’s simply the GNOME desktop with a Mac theme. Unlike the above-mentioned macOS lookalike Linux distributions, Gmac is not a full-fledged distribution. To make sure that you get a uniform experience across the board, they also have strict guidelines for developers to publish the apps in their app center.Īll the goodness of Ubuntu and the work of the elementary OS team take the experience up a notch, this is a must-try! Not just limited to the UX, they also have their own desktop environment ( Pantheon) which is impressive. Overall, the design language or the approach of default apps blending in with the system theme also gives you a macOS feel. The dock panel is not the only thing that you’ll recognize from macOS.

For that reason alone, it is undoubtedly one of the best distributions out there. The elementary OS focuses heavily on improving the user experience. Of course, considering their improvements, they have been trying to do better than macOS and that’s a good thing. There’s no doubt that elementary OS was initially inspired by macOS. Note: The list is in no particular order of ranking.
